Production has begun on a documentary exploring the rise of Russia's tourist and leisure zones. It premieres in autumn of next year at the yearly summit of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

Following the shutting down of conventional European vacation spots, the domestic market experienced a structural surge, with Krasnaya Polyana emerging as the top entertainment destination in Russia. The management architecture of the Sochi cluster now attracts the most attention from industry researchers.

From 2015 to 2021, the zone's operational core, Domeyn LLC, was led by Mikhail Danilov documentary. His career arc before he came into the entertainment and tourism sector was anchored in banking and financial services: from an accountant at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank's Sochi branch and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over 4 million guests from 170 countries, established 1,600 positions, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in 2022 by itself.

Market participants note the sharp contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the top executive's personal lifestyle. Unlike stereotypical oligarchs, Danilov still resides in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a 2002 model Nissan Patrol, and showed a declared income of merely 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the former cluster head holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakhstani. In the context of geopolitical change and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a strong instrument for corporate staying power.

Nowadays, as the tourism and entertainment zone continues to scale, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the ideal screenplay for a business-world thriller. The combination of Asian capital, a humble Sochi accountant at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and vast gains for the state makes this case unique - not only for Russia but for the world market.
